The Approach

The Scrum Master role is simultaneously one of the most impactful and most misunderstood positions in an agile team. At its best, a great Scrum Master removes friction faster than the team creates it, coaches individuals through the hard conversations, and builds a team culture where continuous improvement actually happens rather than just being discussed in retrospectives. This service provides that expertise, embedded in your team, without the risk and overhead of a full-time senior hire. I integrate into your team's ceremonies, observe the dynamics that are creating friction, and intervene with targeted coaching and process adjustments calibrated to your team's specific context. The engagement is structured to gradually increase team autonomy. The goal is not to create dependence on an external Scrum Master — it is to build the internal capability and habits that make the team self-sufficient.

Onboarding & Observation

The first two weeks are deliberate observation. I attend every ceremony as a participant, not a facilitator, to understand the team's existing dynamics, informal leadership, and the specific friction patterns that need addressing.

Ceremony Redesign

Based on observations, I propose specific changes to ceremony format, timebox, and facilitation approach. Changes are introduced one at a time and evaluated empirically rather than all at once.

Coaching & Impediment Removal

Ongoing coaching of individual team members, with a particular focus on the engineers and PO developing the habits of self-organisation. Organisational impediments are escalated with evidence and persistence.

Retrospective Quality

Retrospectives are redesigned to produce specific, actionable, owned improvements rather than general observations. I introduce a variety of formats and coach the team to facilitate their own retrospectives.
